Being a woman in the entertainment industry

Lately, media has covered a lot of women’s issues and we have been seeing a lot of powerful women in the media, as well. How is it possible that in a country with equal rights to both sexes, women still get 78 cents to every dollar that men make? It seems fairly strange that such statistic even exists, to be perfectly honest.

In times when movements such as the new U.N. campaign HeForShe are still vitally necessary, sirens blast on my ears and I can see red lights screaming “danger”. One would hope that in 2014, after all breakthroughs and discoveries the world has seen, gender equality would be here.

Don’t get me wrong: I am a supporter of this campaign and of every word Emma Watson has said on the day it was launched. Her speech was inspiring to young women everywhere, and also to the entertainment industry: another artist involved with a human rights’ movement. Even more than that: a woman fighting for woman rights, for the whole world to see.

When I came across her speech, I realized that this cause spoke deeply to me. How could it not? How can it not speak to every single woman out there? Being a woman in the world is not as easy as we like to think, is it? Being a woman in the entertainment industry is not as easy as we would hope, that’s for sure.

Fast Company’s article on how women balance their personal lives and careers made me feel depressed. There is definitely a cry for help that is not being heard. Professionals claiming they are just trying to make it through and that would like better opportunities – all unheard.

The entertainment industry is cruel by itself, but it is even more vicious to women who want to succeed. A fast-paced environment that is ruthless on personal lives, issues, dreams, plans, the so-called “biological clock” and much else…

So how can one feel being a woman in this reality, working hard for a career? I, for once, take these one hundred amazing women asexample.  They did it. So why can’t we? The world might say we are worth only 78 cents to each dollar. But we are not. It is up to us to prove it.

  1. Good evening Paula I hope you are having a wonderful weekend so far. I just finished reading your blog about being a woman in the entertainment industry. As you stated before, you would expect that today we would have a better balance. The sad truth is that there is still places where females have even less equality. The entertainment industry is filled with female talented professionals and supporters. Females make up the majority of consumers in the entertainment industry market. However many of the key positions within the industry are still held by males. It will be interesting to see how this changes in the future.
